Probably a late introduction from England. Janet Hallam in the Carse of Twynholm, 1758 (Kirkcudbright). From Upper Hallam, a township in the old parish of Sheffield.
Most probably a variant of Hallam, which see. John Hallum or Hallume was hanged for being a Covenanter, 1685 (Hanna, II, p. 268). His epitaph is given by Dick (p. 97).
