User-submitted Reference

The Irish Ó hÁdhmaill / Ó hÁghmaill, is pronounced O'Hamill. Over time because of this pronunciation it changed to Hamill, as Irish people of the time tried to have more English sounding names because of the threat of genocide from the English (Plantation of Ulster).

It means descendant of Ádhmall (quick, ready, active) and the clan was noted for being poets and ollovs (learned people).
