(English) Dweller at 1 the Ham-Lea [v. Ham (local), and + Middle English ley, Old English leáh] 2 the Hamel-Lea [v. Hamel(l] As Hamley and Hambly are fairly common surnames in Cornwall, Jenner (Handbk. Cornish Lang., p. 200) thinks they maybe from the name Hannibal; but this is hardly likely.
An armigerous family of considerable antiquity in Cornwall, where they are mentioned temp. Edw. II. See D. Gilbert's Cornwall, passim. The name existed contemporaneously with Hamlyn, with which it was apparently convertible in that county. Hamlyn is of course the A.-Norm, personal name Hammeline. The surname is now of rare occurrence in Cornwall, though it is found at Exeter, and since about the beginning of the present century, at Norwich.
"Hamley of Halwyn, now of St. Columb and Bodmin, whose surname has been written Hamelye, Hamlyn, and Hamblyn, is of great antiquity in Cornwall, where it appears to have been seated before the Norman Conquest" (C. S. Gilbert. ) Lower thinks that the name, which he rightly considers the same as Hamlyn, is the Anglo-Norman, Hammeline. If of Cornish origin, it may come from hâl-mellin, the mill moor. But see Hamelin.
