Local. A corruption of Hammeline, which was taken from Hamelen, a town on the river Weser, Germany. Hamelin, a town in Scotland, so called from Ham, a house or village, and tin, a waterfall, a small lake or pond.
The Hamlyns are numerous in the Ashburton district, where they have long been located, especially in the parish of Widecombe. In the 16th and 17th centuries Hamlyn was a common name in Widecombe; in the 17th and 18th centuries a family of Hamlyn owned the manor of Dunstone and the farm of Blackslade; and Chittleford, also in Widecombe parish, was the home of a family of the name in the reign of Charles I. (W. A. and Dy.). Hamlyn was the name of the mayors of Exeter in 1468 and 1499 (I.).
