In the 16th and 17th centuries Hamlyn was a common name in Widecombe; in the 17th and 18th centuries a family of Hamlyn owned the manor of Dunstone and the farm of Blackslade; and Chittleford, also in Widecombe parish, was the home of a family of the name in the reign of Charles I. (W. A. and Dy.). Hamlyn was the name of the mayors of Exeter in 1468 and 1499 (I.).
