This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Hamon,' from diminutive Hamon-et; v. Hammon. This soon became Hamnet. The rival diminutive of Hamnet was Hamlet (Hamelot), and frequently both forms are ascribed to the same individual, but they must be kept distinct; v. Hamlet. Hamnet as a font-name existed till the last century. It was extremely popular in Cheshire for many centuries. As a surname it is naturally found in that district, the Hamonet of the London Directory representing a Frenchman, a teacher of music.
