This surname is derived from an official title. 'the hanaper.' The corruption was all but inevitable. A hanaper was a kind of basket in which to store documents, &c. Hence the Hanaper Office, and the familiar hamper (v. English Surnames, 4th edit.). The hanaper seems to have had charge of the stored-up indentures, &c. 'Hanypere or hamper, canistrum': Promptorium Parvulorum.

Apparently from the large coarse basket called in old times a hanaper. The Hanaper Office is a place where writs were formerly deposited in baskets, and the original Mr. Hanaper or Hamper may have been connected with that establishment. A Galfridus le Hanaper, occurs in H.R.-probably a sobriquet.
