This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Hallamshire,'easily and naturally corrupted to Hampshire. There can be no doubt about the Yorkshire Hampshires; they are descended from Hallamshire folk. Nine-tenths of our Hampshires = Hallamshire. The order is Hallomshire, Halmshire, Hamshire, and (with customary intrusive 'p' after m, as in Simpson or Thompson) Hampshire.
