Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) by Henry Harrison

The English name Hampson has superseded the older O’Hanson-Ó hAmhsaigh-that of a small sept of Co. Derry. An earlier anglicized form was O'Hempsey, which is still extant in north Ulster as Hamsey. SIF 84

A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

The name Hampson has a very English look and indeed there is such a surname indigenous in England, but in Ireland, or at any rate in and near Co. Derry, it presents an example of the deplorable tendency, especially marked during the penal times, of corrupting good Gaelic Irish names so as to give them an English appearance. The small Derry sept of O'Hempsey had become O'Hamson by 1659, at which time it is thus recorded in the so called census of 1659-60 as one of the principal Irish surnames in the barony of Keenaght, and as O'Hampson and O'Hanson it will be found in the contemporary hearth money rolls for Co. Derry. From 1700 we seldom meet the name except as Hanson * or Hampson, though the Irish musician Denis Hempson * (b. 1695 Co. Derry, d. 1793) used O'Hempsey as an alternative form.

Wills and other records indicate that for the past two centuries members of the sept were to be found to some extent in-other Ulster counties as well as Co. Derry. A Charles Hampson was among the purchasers of forfeited estates in Co. Cavan in 1700 and a Capt. William Hampson is also listed in the same connexion. There is a pedigree of Hampson of Cavan in the Genealogical Office, but it does not go back far enough to indicate whether this family was of Irish or English origin.

*O'Neill in his Irish Minstrels states that O'Hempsey's teacher was the blind travelling harper, John Garragher. Garragher, called MacGarragher in the list of O'Donnell's followers in 1601, is a name which is now found occasionally in County Roscommon.

†Heanue belongs particularly to the north-west part of Connemara, where it is quite numerous.
