From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From a place named Handyside near Berwick. Richard de Hanggandsid, dominus ejusdem, in 1398 had an annual pension of two marks out of the ferms of Medilham in the barony of Bolden for his faithful counsel and aid given and in future to be given (Kelso, 520). John Hangandsyd witnessed a charter by the same Richard of a land in Lytyl Newton to the Abbey of Kelso, c. 1398, and Adam Hangalsyde also appears as a witness in the same year (ibid., 521; LSC., 110). Patone de Hangaldesyde served on an inquest anent a fishing on the Tweed in 1467 (RD., 461), and in 1469 as Patrick Haneangside he is mentioned in a retour of the lands of Wedderburn (Sc. Ant., VII, p. 25). In 1494 we have mention of the tenement of quondam William Hangitsyde in Glasgow (REG., p. 487), in 1532 there is record of the lawborrowis of Richard Hangandsyde in Litill Newtoun (RSS., II, 1491), and in 1563 Nigel Hangetsyide was a witness in Glasgow (Protocols, I). A charter of Richard of Hangansyde of that Ilk to his son, Alexander was confirmed in 1563 (RMS., IV, 1463). Elizabet Hangetsyde and Dandie Hanginsyde were tenants under the Abbey of Kelso, 1567 (Kelso, p. 524,527), James Hangitsyde in Caldstreime appears in 1654 and John Handisyde in Thirlstaine in 1665 (Lauder). Lower's explanation of the origin of the name from a personal deformity is erroneous. Some notes on the family are given in the History of the Berwickshire Naturalists' Club, XIV, p. 294—295.
