In the southwest this name is from Irish O hAnnain, 'descendant of Annan.' George Hannan, burgess of Kirkcudbright, 1645 (Retours, Kirkcudbright, 231), and John Hannan is in the parish of Carsfern, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 575). (2) John Hanyn was burgess of Berwick, c. 1147 (Kelso, 31). It is said there were families or a family of this name in or about North Berwick at the end of the eighteenth century. A Thomas Hannan purchased a number of books at the sale of the library of Wedderburn of Blackness, 1710 (Sc. Ant., VII, p. 46).
