Hansard Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'the Hansard,' a merchant of one of the Hanse towns, a member of the Hanseatic league. Lower, following Ferguson, says it is a personal name. This is quite possible, but so far as I am aware neither offers any evidence. My instances are from the East coast, which strongly suggests a Hanseatic origin. Luke Hansard, the founder of the Parliamentary Hansard, was born in Norwich in 1752 (Chambers' Encyc. v. 332). As will be seen below, his ancestors were in the same county five centuries earlier. Hassard and Hazard are perhaps modifications; but v. Hassard.
Gilbert Haunsard, Lincolnshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
John Haunsard, Norfolk, ibid.
John Hasard, Yorkshire, ibid.
John Haunsard, Northamptonshire, Henry III-Edward I: Testa de Nevill, sive Liber Feodorum, temp. Henry III-Edward I.
Gilbert Haunssard, Lincolnshire, 20 Edward I: Placita de Quo Warranto, temp. Edward I-III.
William Hasard, Close Rolls, 36 Henry III.
Alan de Haunsard, taverner, 4 Edward II: Freemen of York.
1624-5. Edward Hassard and Elizabeth French: Marriage Lic. (London).
1631. John Hansard and Athe French Nevinson: ibid.
HAUNSARD: Johan de Haunsard of Forfarshire who rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 199) was most probably a descendant of the Hansards of England.
= Hans (q.v.) + the French diminutive suff. -ard [Teutonic hard, hard, brave]
An ancient personal name, which Mr. Ferguson derives from the Gothic ans, semi-deus, a hero, with the termination heard, hard. The Hansards of Evenwood, co. Durham, formerly had a seat in the palatinate parliament convened by the bishop of Durham. Folks of Shields, p. 18. Hansard is also a provincialism for a bill-hook or hedge-bill. The Hansards of Durham were commonly characterized as the Handsome Hansards.
(British.) From ard, nature, and has, high—of high disposition, proud, independent.
Ard, art, ert, the termination of several thousand names, is generally equivalent to "son," and is derived from German, art, kind, species, race. Among other names are Bichard, Billiard (Bill), Bustard (Bust), Buzzard, Canard, Caward, Chaffard (Chaff, i. e. Chauve), Clayard (Clay), Clinkard, Costard, Covert, Coward (Cow), Custard (Cust), Dullard (Dull), Galliard, Glazard (Glaze), Grillard, Guessard, Hazard, Izzard, Killard, Klinkheart (Klink), Lollard, Mansard, Mustard (Moist, for Moyce, Moyes, i. e. Moses), Packard (Pack), Peckard (Peck or Pech), Perchard, Pinchard (Pinch), Pirssard, Pissard, Poignard, Pollard (Pol or Paul), Popard, Punchard (Punch), Ramard (Ram), Rollard, Spillard (Spill), Stoppard, Touchard (Touch), Trenchard (Trench), Windard, Woolard (Wool), Workhard, &c.
Hansard: from one of the Hanseatic towns.
Hansard: not mentioned in Domesday; but the Hansards appear as Barons in the palatinate of Durham in the twelfth century. This is probably an interpolation.
