From the ON. personal name Haroldr, naturalized among the Gael as Arailt or Erailt. Harald, chaplain to the bishop of Dunkeld, was the first bishop of the see of Argyll, created c. 1200, because he was acquainted with the language of the people of those parts. As Harald bishop of Ayrgaythyl, he had. a grant from Alexander II in 1228 of three dauachs of Culkessoch which "the said bishop and his successors "in ecclesia Lysmoriensi' should hold" (REM., p. 25). His name was preserved in Killespeckerrill, i.e. church of bishop Erailt or Harold, at one time the alternative name of the parish of Muckairn.
