Harazim Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

The surname Harazim is of Czech origin and derives from a historic rural estate known as the 'Erasime Hof' (Harazim Homestead) located in Rájov, near Zlatá Koruna, South Bohemia. This estate appears in written records as early as 1538, when it was held by a man named Jíra Severa, and was sold in 1559 to his brother Erazim Severa, after whom the estate was named.

By 1569, the estate was officially referred to as the 'Erasime Hof' (Erazim's court). Over time, the local name for the area and the estate evolved phonetically into Harazim. In the 17th century, Pavel Severa, the grandson of Erazim Severa, adopted Harazim as his surname—making him the first documented bearer of the family name.

Thus, Harazim is a toponymic surname, originally referring to someone who lived at or came from the Erasime Hof. Indirectly, it is also patronymic, as the estate was named after Erazim, a Czech form of the name Erasmus.

Variants of the surname, such as Harasim, Harasin, Harazyn, and Harassym, can be found in neighboring regions (e.g. Silesia, Poland, Austria), likely due to dialectical differences and regional spelling conventions, but all trace back to the same root: the original estate in South Bohemia.
