This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Harden Castle'. Mr. Lower writes,' Must be, I think, a contraction of Harden Castle, the ancient residence of the Scotts of Harden, and a fine specimen to this day of a border fortress, in Roxburghshire' (Patronymica Britannica). This is quite possible. It is found in Northumberland and Durham. I am strongly inclined to this view, but evidence is lacking, so far as my reading goes.

John Hardcastle was mayor of Hull in 1573 (Tickell's "Hull"). Thomas Hardcastle was minister of Bramham in the reign of Charles II. (Th.). Hardcastle Craggs is the name of a locality near Hebden Bridge in the West Riding.
