From Old French hardi, bold, daring. Hardy is a common French surname. (1) The tale of Malcolm Ceannmor addressing the first Hardy, after he had performed a William Tell exploit, "Hardy thou are and Hardy thou shalt be" (Celt. Mon., VII, 137), is nonsense. William Hardy of Lanarkshire rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 213). Alexander Hardy is in record in Arnbroath, 1505 (RAA., a, 440), and William Herdy of Orkney had a respite for his share in the battle of Summerdale, 1529 (RSS., II, 3151). Robert Hardy, latimus, church of Holy Trinity, Edinburgh, 1519 (Soltre, p. 183), and William Hardie, unicorn pursuivant, 1566 (RPC I, p. 480). Alexander Hardie appears in Meikle Tippertie, 1633 (SCM., III, p. 95), and the name is found in Lauderdale from 1643. Several Hardies are recorded in the Commissariot Record of Dunblane in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. (2) The Hardies of Crathie and Crathienard, originally Machardies, which see, were a wild and extravagant race (Invercauld, p. 260). Hardye 1586. Magnus Hardie or Hairdy was a witness in Kirkwall, 1613 (OSR., p. 277—278).
