A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Harford is a fairly numerous name in Dublin and adjacent areas. Derived from the English placename Hereford (it may also, rarely, be from Hertford) it has been in Ireland since the thirteenth century.

Mediaeval and early modern records contain many references to the name in Leinster, especially in Co.

Kilkenny. In the “census” of 1659it actually appears as a “principal Irish name” in the barony of Balrothery, Co. Dublin, where, it is of interest to note, it was also numerous in quite recent times. However it was not confined entirely to Leinster, for we find a Harford mayor of Youghal in 1618 and the only entry in the Jacobite outlawries is of a Co. Monaghan man.

The town and county of Hertford are vulgarly so pronounced, but there is a parish of Harford in Devonshire with which however the family do not appear to have been connected. According to Burke, "the cunabula gent is was Bosbury, co. Hereford, in the church of which parish there are several ancient monuments of the family." B.L.G.
