User-submitted Reference
The name Harland comes from Harland Moor in North Yorkshire (2 miles from Kirbymoorside). In the middle ages there was a large Viking settlement in the area, which was heavily wooded. However, the inhabitants cut down all the trees without planting any new ones, so the area became a wasteland and the inhabitants all moved to other locations around the Vale of York and later emigrated all around the world.
