Harriman Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the servant of Harry'; compare Matthewman, Addyman, Periman, &c. Mr. Lower says,' One who harried, a freebooter.' It is curious that I chiefly find the name in Cumberland, where the Scotch raids were so common in former times. Nevertheless, the origin given above is the natural one, and it belongs to a class that has made a distinct mark upon nomenclature. In the first two instances given below we must remember that the pronunciation of Henry would be much as if spoken in French, Harry being not a pet form of Henry, but a spelling assimilated to the sound.
Ricardus Henryman, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.
Willelmus Henriman, 1379: ibid.
1794. Married — John Harriman and Elizabeth Tobey: St. George, Hanover Square.
1807. — William Harryman and Sarah Steade: ibid.
= Harry (q.v.) + man. But in the North this name is for ‘Harry’s Man’ (i.e. servant).
(English) The servant to Harry (home ruler).
To harrie is an old northernism for to pillage, and a Harriman is therefore a freebooter or ravager.
