A surname common to Fife and district. "The first of this name is described as a Flemish gunner; it may be a form of Harmwijn" (Sc. Ant., IV, p. 114. So Rev. A. W. C. Hallen the editor, who had a penchant for tracing most Fife surnames to a Flemish source). William Harower or Herwart had a charter of the office of keeper of the king's muirc and cunningare in Crail in liferent in the reign of David II (RMS., I, App. II, 909). Robert Harwar was burgess of Perth, 1440 (RD., p. 297), and 'Sir' John Harwar who was vicar of Cortochquhay in 1452 (REB., II, 87) may be the John Harwar, chaplain, mentioned in 1455 (RAA., II, 104). James Harwar was vicar of Banchoryterne in 1465 (RAA., II, 161), Thomas Harrowar is in record in Belheluy, 1506 (REA., II, p. 96), and Thomas Harrour appears as vicar pensioner of Arnbroath, 1512 and 1524 (RAA, II, 532,585). Thomas Herrowar was witness in Aberdeen, 1536 (Aboyne, p. 65), and the escheat of William Harrowar was disponed to James Prymrois in 1603 (RD., p. 496). The surname appears several times in Dunfermline between 1561 and 1700 (Dunfermline). The surname is from the occupation, a worker on the land, from ME. harwe, a harrow, with agental suffix -or.
