Hartnell or Hartnoll is an old Tiverton name. George Hartnoll, gent., left a bequest for the poor of Tiverton in 1662 (H.). For the years 1621, 1627, 1665, and 1746 we find the name of Hartnoll in the list of Tiverton churchwardens (D.). Mr. Nicholas Hartnoll, butcher, was burnt to death in Tiverton in the fire of 1591 (D.).
