I hesitate to accept Woulfe's statement that Hearty is Ó hAghartaigh and a variant of Ó Faghartaigh, which as we know from the Book of Lecan was of Carra (Co. Mayo) and has since been confused with Faherty. Not only do the birth registrations of the past century indicate that the name now belongs almost exclusively to counties Louth and Monaghan; three centuries ago O'Hearty appears in the Oriel country several times in the Co. Armagh Hearth Money Rolls.
