'Hastlere, that rostythe mete, assaior, assarius': Promptorium Parvulorum Mr. Way, in a valuable note, has several references to the 'hastator' and 'hastalarius,' and compares the French hasteur. He adds. 'Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Essex, among the household servants mentioned in his Will, 1361, as "potager, ferour, barber, ewer," mentions "Will, de Barton, hastiler"' (Royal Wills). Among the domestic officers of the Earl of Northumberland, 1511, was a' yoman cooke... who doith hourly attend in the kitching at the haistry for roisting of meat' (Ant. Rep. iv. 344). In Lancashire the hastener is the tin screen for preserving and reflecting the lieat when the roast is on the spit. The origin seems plain: 'Haste, a spit or broach' (Cotgrave). Latin hasta, a lance, a pike. The modern forms of the surname are Haster, Hastiler. Hastier, Haseler, Hasler, and Haysler, all being somewhat rare.
