From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
HASSENDEAN: From the ancient barony of the name in the parish of Minto, Roxburghshire. There ere but few scattered references to the family of this name who derived their surname from the lands. Helias de Hadestanden was one of the witnesses to the gift of the lands of Dundas to Helias, son of Huctred, in the reign of David I or Malcolm IV (APS., I, p. 82), and c. 1170 Richard de Hastenden witnessed the charter confirming the gift of the church of Kilmaurs to the Abbey of Kelso (Kelso, 286). In the reign of Alexander II (1214—1249) Christina, daughter of William son of Adam of Astenesdene, granted to Hugh the brewer of Astenden a charter of lands in the territory of Astenden (Melros, p. 241). About 1330 Sir Thomas of Hassynden was warden (custos) of the monastery of Kelso (Kelso, p. 381), in 1374 Thomas Hassyndon was parson of the church of Mynto (Rot. Scot., I, p. 965), and a third Thomas Hassynden was one of the archers of the East March in 1404 (Bain, IV, 669). Thomas Hassindaine, 1634 (Lauder).
