This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Asketin' , an Old French diminutive of Askettle. As Askettle became undoubtedly Askell, which see, so Asketin probably became Askin. For further instances and remarks, v. Astell. Nevertheless, I am not quite satisfied with this solution. Like Wilkin and Wilkins from William, it would appear that Askin and As kins represent a popular nick, of some once familiar personal name.
