By corruption Birkenhead or Birkhead became Birkett, just as Beckhead (at the head of the beck, the stream) became Becket. In a similar way Hazelhead narrowed itself into Haslet, &c. Hazlehead is a hamlet in the parish of Thurlstone, West Riding of Yorks; compare Haselfoot (i.e. one who dwelt at the foot of the hazel wood), London Directory.—Three years after writing the above I came across:
