Hassalls first arrived in Australia in 1798 as Quakers from Tahiti, with the London Missionary Society. Rowland and Elisabeth Hassall (nee Marsden daughter of Rev. Samuel Marsden), along with their 2 eldest children Thomas Hassall and Samuel Otoo Hassall escaped Tahiti on the Duff. Relations between missionaries and Tahitians turned sour so the Hassall family left along with other missionary families for their safety to the nearest colony, Australia. There they had another 6 children.
