From Haswell in Durham. Adam de Lambertun granted to Galfridus de Hesswel, his grandson, a third part of his lands of Lambertun, c. 1190—1200 (Home, 223; BNCH., XVI, p. 332). William de Hessewelle of Roxburghshire rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears a lion rampant on a rose and S' Willelmi de Heswel (Bain, II, p. 198,548). Peter de Hessewel, juror on inquest at Dumfries, 1304 (Bain, II, p. 412). John de Hessewell, dominus de Eddellysheued, who witnessed a charter by Roger de Auldton c. 1354 (Kelso, p. 387) may be the John of Hessewelle who was one of an inquest at Roxburgh, 1357 (Bain, IV, 1). Thomas Haswele, servitor to the earl of Douglas, 1408 (ibid., IV, 765). Robert of Haswell granted certain lands in the sheriffdom of Peebles in 1436 to his son Patrick Haswele and to his brother William Haswel (OPS., I, p. 521). In 1438 there is record of sasine of the lands of Murefelde to John Haswel, and in 1519 of the same to David Hasthwell (Laing, 116,316). James Haswell or Hasmall, abbot of Newbattle before the Reformation, witnessed the destruction of his monastery by the troops of the earl of Hertford (Neubotle, preface, p. xxvii). The surname still exists in Newbattle. Haswellsykes in Manor parish, is from a former owner or this name. Hasswell 1753 Haswell 1662.
