Andrew Hatmalin, Thomas Hatmalin, and Duncan Hatmalin are recorded in Aberdeen in 1493 (CRA., p. 50). The index gives the name as 'Hatmaker, for Thomas but makes no mention of Andrew and Duncan. William Hatt in Brounhill, 1633 (SCM., III, p. 90), and Alexander Hatt, a trade burgess in Aberdeen in 1670, is perhaps Alexander Hatt, maltman there in 1697 (ROA., I, p. 236,246). Alexander Hatt was a fanner at Haughton of Bieldside, Banchory-Devenick, 1846. Harrison says from a trade name. Perhaps Hatmalin is an error of transcription. compare Hatmaker.

According to Ferguson, Hatt is the oldest hereditary surname on record. He says it corresponds with the Old German names Hatto, Heddo, and Chado, signifying "war," and consequently with Haddo, Head, Chad, whence perhaps Shade. It is more likely from the root of heath, viz. Anglo-Saxon hath, Dutch and German, heide, Danish, hede.
Hatt and Hutt may be in most cases a contraction of Hiatt, also an Oxfordshire name. In the 13th century we find Hat in Oxfordshire and Wilts, and Hut in Oxfordshire, where it is associated with Le Hurt (H. R.).
