From the occupation of "hat-maker," a now probably obsolete surname. Duncan Hatmaker was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1481 (NSCM., I, p. 29), and Thomas Hatmaker was burgess there in 1487 (CRA., p. 44). John Hatmaker appears as witness in Brechin in 1511 (REB., II, 165,166). Peter Hatmaker was member of assize at Cupar in 1521 (SCBF., p. 223), Henrie Hatmaccar was indweller in Leith in 1561 (MCM., II, p. 286), and Alexander Hat-makker had a "tenementum infra burgagium de Elgyn" in 1565 (REM., p. 436). George Hatmaker was retoured heir of James Hatmaker, portioner of Coutfauld, his father, in 1642 (Retours, Elgin, 78), and in 1684 Jon Hatmaker "for his imprecationes to the stent masters to remaine in prison during the Magistrats pleasure and to be fynd at their pleasure" (Rec. Inv., II, p. 320).
