Hatui is the title mostly found in the western part of the Hooghly river. This includes Midnapur (Jhargram), Bardhaman, Hooghly and Howrah. By origin they all belong to Sadgop caste, also known as Aguri in several parts of West Bengal. Later on some of them considers themselves as Kayastha because the two castes culturally similar. Although the Sadgops' are mainly a landholding and business community, now have settled in Kolkata and other cities of West Bengal. It is heard from many of the older people of the community that earlier they were 'Ghosh' by surname. After that due to the internal problem within the community the king of Bardhaman send them to the king of Orissa (now Midnapur, Jhargram district). Then they got the title hatui. Haaati means 'to shift' in Oria. They all come into General caste of Indian government system.
