Peter de Halugh who witnessed a charter by Robert de Burneuill to the Abbey of Kelso, c. 1200—14 (Kelso, 323), is probably Sir Peter de Halu or of the Halch, a cleric, burgess of Rokesburc in 1235 and prepositus in 1237 (ibid., 285,301). John de Hawhe, notary public in Glasgow, 1409 (RMP., p. 57). John Haugh in Callintoyis, 1617. John Haugh in Meikle Daltone, 1685, and three more of the name (Dumfries). "This very puzzling word occurs in an immense number of place names, and consequently in many surnames, but nobody seems to know what it means" (Weekley, p. 61).
