From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the town of Hawick, Roxburghshire. Various persons surnamed 'of Hawick, tenants of the Lovels, lords of the barony of Hawick, or residents and burgesses of the town appear in record as early as 1175—79. Roger, son of John of Hawic, was a charter witness at that date (Melros, p. 129), and Hugh de Hauic witnesses a charter by Robert de Lundris (RAA., I, 61). William Hawick was prebendary of Guthrie, 1234 (REB., I, 60). Robert of Hauewyk of Roxburghshire rendered homage, 1296. His seal bears a lion coiled within two squares, interlaced, and S' Rob'ti de Havwic (Bain, II, p. 200,532). John de Hawewyk, clerk, had a safe conduct from Richard H to study at Oxford in 1380 (Rot. Scot., II, p. 20). Andrew of Hawyk (Hawic, Hawik), rector of Listoun, was secretary to Robert, duke of Albany, and is frequendy mentioned in record. John of Hawike, presbyter and notary public in Glasgow diocese 1410—30 (LCD., p. 165,237; RMS., II, 9). Robert de Hawyk was depute collector of customs for the burgh of Edinburgh, 1425 (ER., IV) and juror on an inquisition made there in 1428 (RAA., II, 61). The Hawicks of Skatska, Delting, are referred to in 1575, and appear to have been people of some prominence. Andrew Hawick of Skattiska in Zetland was debtor to the burgesses of Dysart in 1578 (Dysart, p. 39).
