An old Galloway surname. The name is local from Hawthorn in the parish of Easington, county Durham. A family of the name were proprietors of Meikle or Over Aires in the parish of Kirkinner. In 1455 the Chamberlain accounts "for 15 bolls farinae avenaticae" (oatmeal) of the escheat of Daude Halthorn (ER., VI p. 195,205). Two Hauthornes were summoned to compear before the Lords of Council in Jan. 1484 (ADC., p. 97). The family became kyndlie tenants on the lands of Airies under the Church, and 'Sir' Mychaell Hathorne was reader in Toskertoun in the first list of Reformed clergy (Agnew, I, p. 425; Laing, 408). Margaret Hathorn appears in Carstairs, 1602 (Lanark CR.), Anna Hauthorne was heir of James Hauthorne, burgess of Stranraer, 1628 (Inquis., 1432), and Esther Halthorn in Pathhouse of Colleumis in record, 1728 (Kirkcudbright).
