This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Heilin.' Possibly a variant of Aylwin, which see. The aspirate need give no trouble, as this dictionary fully demonstrates. Of course the 'g' in Hayling and Haylings is excrescent; compare Jennings. There was at least one family of this name of Welsh origin, hailing from the parishes surrounding Oswestry and giving their names to the various abodes named Pentreheylin in the area.
