HAYROCK: A family of this name was early connected with Moray. Hugh Heroc, burgess of Elgin, one of the inquest on the king's garden there in 1261 (APS., I, p. 99 red), is doubtless the Hugh Herock, burgess of Elgin, who gianted the lands of Daldeleyt to the church of Holy Trinity, Elgin, in 1286 (REM., p. 283). Archebaldus Heroch, erchdiaconus de Moray in 1268 (ibid., p. 279) appears to have been chosen bishop of Caithness in 1273 (Dowden, p. 236—237). Patrick Heyrock was provost of Elgin in 1272 (Innes Familie, p. 55), Wauter Herok, dean of Moray, rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 211). Walter Herok or Herot, a canon of Glasgow, appears as dean of Moray in 1328—29 (Pap. Lett., a, p. 285,288), and provision of a canonry of Caithness was made to Adam Herok in 1329 (ibid., p. 288), who appears again in 1341 as Adam called Heroch, chancellor of Caithness (Dowden, p. 242).
