This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Hayton': (1) a parish in Cumberland, eight miles from Carlisle; (a) a township in the parish of Aspatria, Cumberland; (3) a parish in Nottinghamshire, three miles from East Retford.
From one or other of the two places so named in Cumberland. Johan de Haytone in Dumfriesshire rendered homage in 1296, and in 1304 petitioned against the oppressions of Sir Maheu de Redman, sheriff of Dumfries (Bain, II, p. 210,397). Thomas de Haytone, vicar of the church of Cambosneythan, and Johan de Hayton, warden of the Hospital of St. Leonerd of Torrens, Lanarkshire, also rendered homage (ibid., p. 204. 214). compare Hetton.
