'at the hazel head,' i.e. one who dwelt at the head of the hazel wood; compare Akenhead (the head of the oaks) and Birkenhead (the head of the birks or birches). By corruption Birkenhead or Birkhead became Birkett, just as Beckhead (at the head of the beck, the stream) became Becket. In a similar way Hazelhead narrowed itself into Haslet, &c. Hazlehead is a hamlet in the parish of Thurlstone, West Riding of Yorks; compare Haselfoot (i.e. one who dwelt at the foot of the hazel wood), London Directory.—Three years after writing the above I came across:
