Hazuda Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
The surname Hazuda derives its origins from a Slavic term which means 'to sleep on a straw-mat'. The Old Slavic term, hazuda, literally means 'a straw or a rush-mat'. The surname, Hazuda, therefore would indicate someone who made ropes from straw or reeds as well as other objects that were used to make straw brooms etc. Another explanation can also refer to a person who during the harvest season avoided work by 'hiding in the hay'.
Alternatively, the surname, Hazuda, can derive its meaning from the Hungarian term, hazud, which means 'to deceive'. The German historian, Johann Siebmacher, in his work Die Wappen der adels in Ungarn, which is a comprehensive biographical index of Hungarian aristocratic families, lists a nobleman named Hazucha. The Hazucha family owned land in Fenyes and Heveser counties and traced its ancestry to Michael Hazucha, who was ennobled in 1777.
Finally, the surname Hazuda can be a dialectic variation of the Czech term, gospoda, meaning 'hospice'. Although the name can refer directly to the keeper of the inn as in the term 'gospod', in medieval times, it referred to 'the Master of the house'. In present day Czech and Slovak it is synonymous with the term 'mister'. The term, hospoda, also signifies the virtue of hospitality.
