From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a nickname. 'the heron'; compare Crane, Stork, Hawk, &c. For early examples, v. Hearn (a).
Ricardus Herun, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.
Emma Herun, 1379: ibid.

1546. Nicholas Heron and Alice Bassett: Marriage Lic. (London).
1695. Edward Heron and Mary Gee: ibid.
The old family of Heron in the Stewertry claim descent from the Herons of Chipchase who appear in Northumberland in the eleventh century. Jordan Heyrun is in record c. 1150 (REG., 11), and Walterus de Hayroun was clerk to William the Lion c. 1178—80 (RAA., I, p. 27). Robert Heyrun was parson of the church of Forde, 1292 (Rof. Scot., I, p. 14). Roger Heron, a charter witness in 1321, appears in a writ by Roger Corbet of Langton in 1330 as Roger Hayron (Laing, 29, 35), and Thomas le (error for de) Heron, knight, was witness to a demise by Roger Corbet of Langton in 1329 (ibid., 33). David Herroun was elected sergeant of Aberdeen, 1526 (Guildry, p. 196), and John Herrowne was already burgess there, 1505 (NSCM., I, p. 43). Alexander Herowne, cuik, was burgess freeman of Glasgow, 1607 (Burgesses). John Harron is in the parish of Keir, 1680 (Dumfries), and Thomas Herron, wright, burgess of Edinburgh, 1734 (Guildry, p. 148). Some time after the Revolution (1688) the family of Heron had their lands of Kerroughtree in Kirkcudbrightshire consolidated into the barony of Heron, but the name has since reverted to its Gaelic designation. Heirun 1251, Herrone 1675, Herroune 1677, Herroun 1526. In Ulster this is said to be an Anglicized form of M'llheron (Mac Giolla Chearain).
Taken au pied de la lettre this name would appear to be derived from the bird; but Heron is a comparatively modern orthography, it having been formerly written Hairun, Heyrun, Heirun, &c. "Sir John Hairun entered England with the Conqueror, and was possessed of Ford Castle, and a very good estate." Kimber's Baronetage. There is a commune in the arrondissement of Rouen called Le Heron, but it does not appear whether this was the cradle of the race.
The family bear a heron argent, in their arms, whence probably the name.
(Welsh.) A hero.
