From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This name has many spelling variants: Hazlip, Heslip, Heyslip and Hyslop were all reported by local registrars and recorded in Matheson's Synonymes (1901); in the 1866 birth registrations, Haslip, Heslip and Heslop as well as Heaslip occur (13 births were registered in that year, all in Cos. Cavan and Down) while in earlier centuries we find many other variants.
The remarkable fact about Heaslip families is that, though since the late eighteenth century the great majority of them have been located in south Ulster, prior to that the name was almost exclusively associated with Munster. At the present time there are 15 families of Heaslip living in or near the parish of Denn, which is between Cavan town and Ballyjamesduff.
The earliest reference I have met is the deposition of Francis Haslopp, described as of Ballyharaghan Castle (which is in the parish of Ruan, Co. Clare), a Protestant deponent, in 1642. Thirty years later a Francis Hasclopp of Killeedy (Co. Limerick) appears as referee in a bounds dispute near O'Brien's Bridge, Co. Clare, and as late as 1831 we find another Francis Huslop (sic) in the Inchiquin estate records for Co. Clare. As Haselope and Heaslip the name appears in the Cork & Ross wills for 1675 and 1695, and I have noticed one or two other Co. Cork references in the late seventeenth century. Finally to give one more variant spelling, and at the same time another county in which they have settled, I may mention William Heslep, who was described in 1725 as of Ballymorane, Kings County, farmer.
According to Reaney the name is derived from the Old English words haesel (or possibly Old-Norse hesli) and hop forming heslihop, i.e. dweller in a hazel valley.
This is the most usual of six variant spellings: it is derived from Old-English words meaning dweller in the hazel valley. In the seventeenth century it was mainly found in Munster, but it is now associated with Co. Cavan. SIF 87
