Heatherman Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
The older form of this name, O'Hedroman is nearer the original Ó hEadroman than the present Hederman which, though it looks English, is a Gaelic surname belonging to counties Clare and Limerick.
Dr. Dermot Hederman (b. c.1629), who was superior of the Irish scholars in the College of St. Barbara, Paris, in 1657, was later proposed as bishop of Limerick and became Vicar-general of that diocese where he was prominent in church affairs for many years, particularly at the time of the alleged “Popish Plot”.
Traditionally the family is of west Clare. Eugene O'Curry in a note to John O'Donovan says: “The O'Hedromans are still numerous in the parish of Moyarta and are traditionally remembered as the ferry and fishermen of Saint Seanan, who, it is said, left them the privilege that none of the name should ever be drowned between Inis-Cathaigh and Kilcardain, nor was any of them remembered to have been drowned within that limit, though they are almost all boatmen.” There is also a tradition that St. Senan appeared to a certain husbandman Senanimus O'Hettromain in the same part of Co. Clare. The modern variant spelling Hetherman is found in east Cork.
