Hebda Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

After the fall of the Polish-Lithuania Republic many Chebdas changed their surname to Hebda. This is especially true if they emigrated to another country. The earliest account of a Hebda dates back to 900 AD, when a peasant earned a title after single-handedly killed a wild bull that had gouged many people, livestock and several others who had previously attempted to kill the bull. Thus the coat of arms for the house of Hebda a is black bull's head with a sword through it on a yellow background. For his deed the peasant was given a name, land and position. Eventually the House became a minor noble family. During the partitions of Poland the lands were taken from them by Russians, and in the early 1900s (before WWI) the eldest heir to the stolen land emigrated to America in a hope of earning enough money to buy his land back. However WWI broke out and he was not allowed to return. By the time the war ended he had started a life in Rhode Island and had no desire to return.
