HELBECK: From Helbeck or Hillbeck in Westmoreland, England. William of Hellebec was one of the witnesses to the gift of the lands of Dundas to Helias, son of Huctred, probably in the reign of Malcolm IV (Not. MSS., I, 23). William de Hellebeke of the county of Dunfres rendered homage in 1296. His seal bears 3 stars, 2 and I, not on a shield, S' Wilelmi Helebec (Bain, II, p. 206,554). He may be the William de Hellebek who in 1316 was imprisoned on suspicion of theft, escaped from the king of Scotland's prison at Penrith, and fled to the churchyard of the parish church, whence he was dragged to the prison at Carlisle. Bishop John of Halton demanded his immediate release, as he had been wrongfully taken out of a sanctuary (Moore, Lands, p. 122).
