Helme Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Local 'at the elm'; compare Ash, Oak, Birch, &c. The aspirate is no obstacle to this view; v. Hellis, &c, and compare Empsall and Hempsall, or Elmsley and Helmsley. (a) Bapt. 'the son of Helm.' Although Miss Yonge has Helmar in her Glossary, and Helmsley would seem to be 'the meadow of Helm,' still I have not found a single trace of a personal name Helm in old records. I consider (1) to be the solution.
Of local origin from the old lands of Helme in the barony of Cavers, Roxburghshire. Hendrie Helm was tenant on lands of the Abbey of Kelso, 1567 (Kelso, p. 526). Margeret Helme was resident in the parish of Borgue, 1684 (RPC., 3. ser. IX, p. 567), and Henry Helm was portioner of Middlem, 1789 (Heirs, 449). The name of James Kelene, tenant on lands of the Abbey of Kelso 1567 (Kelso, p. 521), is probably an error for Helme.
The O. Teutonic pers. name Helm = Helmet; hence Protector, Lord [Old English Old Saxon O.H.Ger. Old Frisian helm = Gothic hilm-s = Old Norse hialm-r] Helm [weóld] Wulfingum (Helm [ruled] the Wulfings).—The Scóp’s Tale, 60
(English, Dutch, German, Swedish) Dweller near the roofed shelter for cattle; dweller at the elm tree; descendant of Helmo, a pet form of names beginning with Helm, as Helmhart, Helmold and Helmarich; descendant of Helm (helmet); helmet.
Teutonic, a helmet; a name borrowed from military associations. "Helm as a termination entered into a great number of regular Anglo-Saxon names, such as Eadhelm, Brighthelm, Alfhelm, &c. Wilhelm (William) is an earlier name, occurring in the genealogy of the East-Anglian kings from Woden."-Ferguson.
