Hemmens Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Emeny.' This forgotten font-name found as Emayn and Imania, like all other names beginning with a vowel, early took an h to it. It was very popular along the East coast (v. Emeny), and existed as a Christian name till the close of the 17th century in Norfolk. The 's' in Hemans is, of course, the patronymic, as in Jones. Emeny was a favourite in Yorkshire, where the nick. Nemeny existed, so we cannot be surprised to find Hemmens as a surname in the same county.

Heman Grelin, Suffolk, 1273. Hundred Rolls.

Hemin' uxor B'car, Cambridgeshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.

1646. Married — John Heamans and Mary Peyhen: St. Dionis Backchurch.
