From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This name was formerly spelt Hepenstal, and still is in the case of the family of Dopping-Hepenstal (until recently of Derrycassan, Co. Longford). It is derived from a Yorkshire place-name. The Hepenstals have been prominent among the landed gentry of Co. Wicklow since the early eighteenth century and references to the name are almost entirely confined to that county and to the neighbouring counties of Wexford and Dublin. The earliest I have met is to a family living at Templeogue towards the end of the seventeenth century. In 1855 there were fourteen householders in Co. Wicklow and seven in Co.

Wexford, according to the returns in Griffith's Valuation. The best known individual was the gigantic Lieut. Jack Hepenstal of the Yeomanry, whose activities in suppressing the Rising of 1798 made him notorious and earned for him the soubriquet of “the walking gallows”. His savagery, however, was quite uncharacteristic of the family.
