A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

The same as Henhyson, which see, "son of Henry," with intrusive "d." in course of time this form with intrusive d gradually ousted the earlier form Henryson. A small clan or sept of this name held lands in Upper Liddesdale, but are not included among the Border Clans named in the 1594 Act of the Scottish Parliament "For punisement of thift, reif, oppressioun and sorning" (APS., IV, p. 71—72). The Hendersons of Fordell in Fifeshire, the chief Lowland family of the name, are believed to be descended from the old Dumfriesshire family of Henrysons. William Henrison, senior, was chamberlain of Logmabane Castle under Edward III in 1374 and following years (Bain, IV, p. 49, etc.). David Hennerson was a tenant of the Casteltoun, Ardmanoch, in 1504 (ER., XII, p. 661). James Hendirsoune had sasine of land as heir of his brother David Henrisoune in Glasgow in 1553 (Protocols, I) John Hendrysone witnessed a bond of manrent in 1586 (BBT., p. 237). The name became D'Handresson among descendants of Scots in France. (2)A branch of the Clan Gunn bears the name Henderson, and the traditional account of their origin is "that they are descended from Henry Gunn, a younger son of George Gunn, who was chief of the clan in the fifteenth century. After the slaughter of their chief and several of his sons in a combat with the Keiths, a family difference led to Henry separating himself from his surviving brothers and settling in the lowlands of Caithness in 1594 we find mention of a champion of the clan Gunn, named Donald Mac-William Mac-Hendrie, who may have had something to say in the matter of the Henderson patronymic; but the popular account is, as has been said, that they are the descendants of Henry Gunn" (Henderson, Caithness family history, p. 283)

(3) The Hendersons of Glencoe have Englished their name from Gaelic MacEanruig, and claim a preposterous descent from one Eanruig Mor Mac Righ Neachtan, "Big Henry son of King Nectan," supposed to have been a Pictish king who reigned from A.D. 700 to 720. A more modest and more probable claim is descent from a Dughall MacEanruig, who is believed to have flourished in the first half of the fourteenth century. As a clan or individually they have made no mark on Scottish history.Stolen from Fore bears
