Hendron Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This name is particularly associated with Co. Armagh. The births for 1865, for example, reveal that of eleven registered in that year eight were at Lurgan, two in other Co. Armagh towns and one in Co.
Antrim. Other years for which statistics are available present a similiar picture though the numbers were smaller and there was less concentration at Lurgan itself. An interesting fact also emerges from this source, viz. that the name Hendry also belongs to Co. Armagh. It appears that while not used as synonyms, both these names are of the same origin as Henderson, which in fact is recorded by the Registrar General as interchangeable: cases where one member of a family was reportered as Hendron and another as Henderson are cited. Reaney, usually a reliable authority, differentiates between Hendry and Hendra, deriving the former, like Henderson, from the Old-French Henri and the latter from a Cornish placename, Hendra being a modern form of hen dref i.e. old homestead. Hendry and MacHendrie are a branch of the Scottish clan MacNaughton. It is thus clear that these two Irish-sounding surnames, Hendron and Hendry, are in fact of British origin-or, if one goes back far enough, of Norman origin *.
Hendron does not appear to be of any great antiquity in Ireland: at any rate I have found no instance of it before the eighteenth century. All the references I have met have been to families located in Ulster, except for Dublin in which, of course, being the capital of the country, people from all the provinces are found. Hendry, however, occurs earlier, e.g. William Hendry is recorded in Pynnar's survey as a tenant on the manor of Fortcunnigham, Co. Donegal, in 1618.
*Except in the rare case of MacHendry being used for MacHenry.
Of Norman origin Hendron is peculiar to Co. Armagh. The English Henderson, cognate with Hendron, also found there, is widespread over the Ulster counties. Both are of comparatively late introduction into Ireland. SIF 88
