HENRYSON: 'son of Henry,' which see. The earliest references to this name locate it in Aberdeen. John filius Henrici appears as burgess of Aberdeen in 1317 (SCM., V, p. 11), and James Henrisson or Henrison, Aberdeen merchant, complained in 1370 of his ship being plundered by English wreckers (Bain, IV, 158,164). John, son of Henry, was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1399 (NSCM., I, p. 1). John Henrici witnessed an instrument of resignation in Brechin in 1434 (REB., I, 65), Walter Henrison was 'sergeand' in Edinburgh in 1467 (Neubotle, 299), and Thom Henryson was tenant of Milhorn in 1478 (Cupar-Angus, I, p. 213). Richard Henrisone witnessed a precept of sasine dated 1479, and John Henrisoun of Pilmure witnessed a retour of special service in 1505 (Home, 23, 29). James Henrisone was member of assize at Cupar, 1521 (SCBF., p. 223), and Malcolm Henrysone alias Makandoy or Henry Makandoy alias Henrysoune is recorded in Glasgow in 1528 (LCD., p. 90 91). John Henrysone had a charter of parts of Arlarie in 1607 (RD., p. 500), and Mausia Henrysone, spouse of Magister Henry Charter, writer to the signet, is recorded in 1640 (Retours, Ayr, 347). Robert Henryson (1430—1506), schoolmaster of Dunfermline, has been called the Scottish Chaucer. There was an old Dumfriesshire family of Henryson, of which William Henrison senior, was chamberlain of Logmabane Castle under Edward III in 1374 and following years. He received from the king of England "an annuity of 20 1., when he was driven by the Scots from his lands in the lordship of Loghmaben, with his children, and had nothing to keep them" (Bain, IV, p. 14,100). He died in 1395. The name is said to have been early carried to France appearing there as D'Arson. It is now merged in Henderson. Henerson 1512, Hendriesoun and Henriesone 1627, Hendryson 1510, Henrysonne 1616.
