Johannes de Hert who witnessed a confirmation charter by Gilbert de Vmframville to the Abbey of Kelso, c. 1228 (Kelso, 325), probably derived his name from Kirkharle (1177, Herle) in Northumberland. The Harles of Kirkharle owned much property in Northumberland (Guppy, p. 314). The surname is recorded in Coldstream; in Glasgow 1943.
The Herles of Prideaux Castle, co. Cornwall, whose name has been occasionally written Earle and Hearle, are "descended from the house of West Hearle in Northumberland, of which Sir William Herle was made, by Edward III., chief justice of the Bench."
